The University of Indonesia (UI) planned to build a science and multidisciplinary laboratory along with state oil and gas company PT Pertamina at the UI campus in Depok.

"The project’s first cornerstone will be laid on Thursday," Head of UK communications office Vishnu Juwono said here Wednesday.

Vishnu said the cornerstone would be laid by Deputy National Education Minister Prof Fasli Jalal along with UK Rector Prof Gumilar Rusliwa Somantri and Pertamina’s President Director Karen Agustiawan.

He said that the center as a World Class Research University was one of the integrated laboratory facilities at the university’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

He said further that the project would be built in stages with the first stage built in the 2010-2011 period with Pertamina’s Community Social Responsibility (CSR) covering 800 square meters.

The foundation would have five floors housing the Bio Processing Laboratory, Genome Research and Bio Informatics rooms, Bio Molecular Laboratory, Cultural Collection Hall, supporting rooms, rooms of staff officials, meeting room, and toilets. The second stage, Vishnu said, would be built in 2012 covering 1,600 square meters, and the last third (last) stage in 2013 on 1,600 square meters.
