Police Raid Gayus Tambunan's House

The national police investigators had confiscated a number of documents and other legal evidences from detained former tax official Gayus Tambunan’s house here Thursday. The police raid was conducted at Gayus’ house at Kelapa Gading’s elite housing complex in North Jakarta, the Indonesian police headquarters’ spokesman Senior Commissioner Marwoto Soeto said. The legal evidences that the police detective unit’s investigators had seized consisted of four cellular phones, a small adapter, five photos of Gayus Tambunan with his wife and son, he said. The police also found a Lion Air’s passenger list for Jakarta-Denpasar flight route dated on November 4, 2010, on the names of SL, Milana Anggraeni (wife) and Gagah Gatuso (child), he said.

During the raid, the police also discovered a piece of paper showing the guest list of Bali’s Westin Hotel on the name of Rani alias Milana Anggraeni.
The hotel room and return flight tickets might have been booked by Rani through Avia Tour. The hotel room was booked for November 4 and 6, he said.

In another development, the police investigators had summoned Gayus’s wife, Milana Anggraeni, for further questioning to reveal the facts of Gayus’ illegal release from the prison on November 3,he said. Through the questioning, the police could find that Gayus, his wife and son flew for Bali from the Soekarno-Hatta International Airport by Lion Air on November 4, he said.

In connection with the efforts to reveal the case of Gayus Tambunan’s illegal release from prison, the police investigators still had about eight more days. "The investigators were given ten days to handle the case. Now the remaining time for them to finish their work is just eight days," Brig.Gen. I Ketut Untung Yoga Ana said.

Gayus Tambunan was found relaxing in the Indonesian resort island of Bali recently while he was officially being detained at the National Police’s Mobile Brigade prison in Depok, West Java. Yoga Ana told newsmen here that the police chief had ordered police investigators to reveal the alleged bribery case in connection with Gayus Tambunan’s release from the prison.

Police Chief General Timur Pradopo had targeted that the dossiers of Gayus Tambunan’s release for having a "vacation" in Bali should be finished within ten days, he said. Regarding the revelation of this case, the police investigators would question Gayus and nine prison guards who had allegedly received bribes from Gayus, he said.

The recent release of Gayus Tambunan from prison has triggered public anger and questioning over the law enforcers’ seriousness and professional handling of corruption cases. House Speaker Marzuki Alie had even asked the National Police chief to immediately take stern action over Gayus Tambunan’s "vacation" from prison and punish those responsible for the scandal.

"The police must find those involved in the violation of the law whereby Gayus was able to go to Bali like a free man," he said at his office on November 11.

He said if it was true that Gayus had watched a tennis match in Bali on November 5, it meant there was something wrong in the internal police organization and the mistake had to be corrected through firm actions. Gayus himself had told the court trial for his corruption case that he was indeed in Bali but whether or not he met with the Golkar Party chairman Aburizal Bakrie during his "vacation" was not clear.

There was strong public reaction to the publication of a picture showing a man resembling Gayus watching a tennis match in Bali on November 5. The case of the junior civil servant working at the tax office caught wide public attention after the police named him suspect for having a suspicious Rp25 billion bank account in his name last March.

Aburizal Bakrie has been associated with Gayus especially with regard to an alleged case of tax fraud involving PT Kaltim Prima Coal which is part of the Bakrie Group and Gayus. Gayus has been held at a police detention center in Depok in connection with his alleged involvement in a tax fraud case also involving police accomplices.
