Beleaguered congressman Anthony Weiner is set to face his humiliated wife Huma Abedin after she arrived at the family home in Washington home earlier today.

Democrat leaders hope the pregnant Mrs Abedin will force her scandal ridden husband to resign - something he has resisted despite calls to quit from his party and President Obama.

Her arrival comes as a fresh set of images emerged demonstrating the shamed congressman's early appetite for exhibitionism as a cross-dressing teenager.

Mrs Abedin, returning from a trip to Africa with her boss Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, has remained silent since the whole Weinergate sexting affair broke two weeks ago.

The National Enquirer pictures show Weiner protectively posing in a pair of pantihose and a bra as he smiles cheekily at the camera.

In another photo an oiled Weiner poses in y-fronted swimming trunks in front of a Christmas tree.

The pictures, taken by a college friend in 1982 when he was 18, demonstrate Weiner's reputation at the State University of Plattsburgh as a flamboyant figure.

Speaking to the Enquirer, the friend said: 'The cross dressing photos were taken during a holiday activity in Anthony's college dorm when he was just a sophomore.

They were taken during the school's traditional secret Santa event.

'It was never quite clear whether one of Anthony's challenges was to become a cross-dresser or if it was just some bizarre stunt he decided to do on his own.

'The secret Santa was a three night event, and on another evening, Anthony showed up wearing skin tight swim briefs.

'He was a very odd guy who went out of his way to do things purely for the shock value.'

A fellow member of Weiner’s New York Democratic delegation, Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, said she’s heard from Weiner’s friends that the congressman is waiting for his wife to come home before making any decisions about his political future.

McCarthy also cited talk among Weiner’s friends about the possibility he could resign this week.

Weiner is on a temporary leave of absence from Congress, in treatment for an undisclosed disorder at an undisclosed location.

He has acknowledged exchanging messages and photos, which ranged from sexually suggestive to explicit, with several women on-line.

Party officials met behind closed doors yesterday for the first time since the New York congressman admitted to sexually charged on-line relationships, agreeing that Weiner should fall on his sword over the ongoing sexting debacle.

The House Democratic leader, Nancy Pelosi, reiterated her call for Weiner to quit, saying after the meeting that she wanted to make sure nobody missed her earlier resignation call while members were on a week-long recess.

Sander Levin said: 'I think we should send a strong message to him that he should resign, and let’s see what happens. The more of us who say it, the more telling it will be.'

Sources close to the politician, who has consistently refused to resign, said he is waiting to speak with Mrs Abedin before making a final decision on whether to quit his congressional post.

With Weiner refusing to resign, frustration among Democrats is increasing as the scandal moves into its third week.

Democrats could try to oust the seven-term congressman from the House Democratic caucus or try to strip him of his committee assignment on the Energy and Commerce panel in hopes of persuading him to quit Congress.

Going into the meeting, Carolyn McCarthy told reporters: 'Hopefully, we're hearing he might resign in a couple of days.' She did not elaborate.

When she emerged later, she added, 'He's waiting for his wife to come home. That's what we're hearing from his friends.'

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi told reporters yesterday why she came to the decision.

She said: 'I came to the conclusion that with the love of his family, the confidence of his constituents and the need for help that congressman Weiner should resign from the Congress.

'I'm never prouder of my colleagues than in times of challenge like this.

'That our caucus understands our concern for the rights of the individual member but our higher responsibility to our country to uphold a high ethical standard in the Congress in the United States.'

On Monday Barack Obama left Weiner no way out after bluntly revealing: 'If it was me, I would resign'.

The U.S. President told NBC's Ann Curry that had he been caught up in a sordid sexting scandal as Weiner has, he would see no other option.

'When you get to the point where, because of various personal distractions, you can't serve as effectively as you need to, at the time when people are worrying about jobs, and their mortgages, and paying the bills - then you should probably step back,' Mr Obama said in a Today show interview.

The President cannot sack Weiner. But his 'advice' may finally be the turning point for the New York Congressman, whose hubris has seen him stubbornly clinging to office despite days of humiliation for his pregnant wife Huma Abedin, and the condemnation of his own party.

It is the first time the President has directly addressed the political scandal that has dominated the media for weeks.

On Monday it emerged the House Ethics Committee had begun its preliminary investigations into the infamous Weinergate Twitter scandal, while at the same time news filtered through that his long-suffering wife Huma Abedin was returning to the couple's troubled Queens home a day early.

Just on Sunday, shocking new photos emerged of the New York Democrat - clothed and partially nude at the House Members Gym - which he allegedly sent to at least one woman.

The latest pictures were published by TMZ which quoted Congressional sources confirming that the lewd photos were indeed taken inside the official House Members Gym, which is in the basement of the Rayburn House Office Building in Washington.

It emerged last week police had questioned an under-age girl who it was feared may have been sent lewd messages by Weiner, although he insisted that nothing 'inappropriate' happened.

Delaware police went to the home of a 17-year-old high school junior to speak to her about the direct on-line communications she has had with the congressman.

The New Castle County Police Department arrived at the girl's home on Saturday around 4:30pm and asked to speak with her mother about the daughter's contact with Weiner.
