Sarah Palin made a big stir this week in the media when she messed up while speaking with a reporter on the history of Paul Revere and the Battles of Lexington & Concord and Bunker Hill. The famous lady politician, former Alaska Governor and Vice-Presidential Candidate, has been traveling the United States and visiting famous historical sites and monuments, speaking to the press. The goal appears to be to drum up popularity for an upcoming campaign in 2012. When a reporter asked her the question, “Who was Paul Revere?”, she began to spout off on a bizarre story that seemed to bear virtually no resemblance with the version every one of us learned in the history books in middle school.
Every school kid knows the story of how Paul Revere, the famous and respected patriot and silversmith, rode through the towns, warning the Minuteman militias that the British were about to attack. However, Sarah Palin told her version of the story instead:
Here’s the Sarah Palin video, for those of you who missed out.
So, her version of the story is as follows:
“He who warned, uh, the British that they weren’t going to be taking away our arms uh by ringing those bells and making sure as he’s riding his horse through town to send those warning shots and bells that we were going to be secure and we were going to be free and we were going to be armed.”
And here’s what CNN had to say about it:
After her little misstep, the media had a field day with the video and with the quote, claiming that she was an absolutely clueless ditz, who had no right to run for office in a country who’s history she obviously failed miserably to understand or even know about. Then, one or two historians came out and mentioned a little-known written account of the historic night, written by Paul Revere himself in testimony before the Continental Congress. In the official testimony, Paul Revere mentions being stopped by a small detachment of British soldiers, who treated him with the utmost disrespect. He then mentions telling one of the soldiers that they should stop their advance into Concord, because they would be met with a large force of Militia who would gladly shoot them on sight if they attempted to invade the towns. In this little known text, Revere very clearly states that he indeed did warn the Brits that we were coming to stop them, and that if they continued their advance into Lexington and Concord, they would be shot.
For those of you who would like to read the entire historic testimony yourselves, you can read the complete transcription here.
Now, it’s likely that Sarah Palin really did mess up, and say something that was really senseless by mistake. However, it looks like she may have just been correct, whether on purpose or by sheer luck! Either way, it’s pretty funny and ironic, and a piece of trivia most of us probably would have never otherwise known about.
