William Suspects Conspiracy, Dodi Fayed's Father Claims

On the eve of the royal wedding, the father of the man killed in the car crash with the late Princess Diana is making new charges about a palace conspiracy he claims led to the death of his son Dodi.

Mohamed Al-Fayed, who has long claimed that a conspiracy within the royal family plotted the deaths of Princess Diana and his son, charged Thursday that Diana's son William suspects a palace plot as well.

"I think William also believes in the conspiracy," al-Fayed said in an exclusive interview with WCVB-TV's Bianca de la Garza. "I have letters from William talking about his struggle with this."

While al-Fayed, who rarely grants interviews, did not allow his interview to be videotaped, he did meet and talk with de la Garza at his London home.

Dodi Fayed was romantically involved with Diana, who had divorced Prince Charles. The couple died in a crash in Paris on Aug. 31, 1997, when the car in which they were riding spun out of control in the Pont de l'Alma underpass.

Al-Fayed believes that the driver of the car, Henri Paul, had plotted with the royal family to kill Diana and Dodi.

At an inquest into Diana's death in 2007, al-Fayed charged that Prince Philip and Prince Charles had plotted to kill the couple because Charles was angry that Diana was dating al-Fayed's son. The inquest rejected his theory and blamed negligent driving for the crash.

"I am convinced they were murdered and will never stop fighting to prove that," al-Fayed said.

Al-Fayed spoke fondly of his relationship with Princess Diana.

"I loved her. Diana loved Dodi's family. We had lots of laughs. Sometimes we would not eat at dinner, we had too much fun laughing," he said.

He said he believes Princess Diana would approve of her son's choice of Kate Middleton as his bride.

"She would love her. She is ordinary, not a snob. She comes from a middle-class family," al-Fayed said.

Al-Fayed said he believes Prince William wanted him to attend the wedding, but the invitation was blocked by the royal family.

Prince William's grandfather, "Prince Philip, did not want me there," said al-Fayed.

"Would you have gone?" asked de la Garza. "Yes. If I got an invite," he answered.

Al-Fayed said he was not sure Prince William was suited for his role in British royalty. "William likes the American life. The British life has too many rules," he said.
